Kris Lau, MA, LMHC, psychotherapist and owner of Alēta Wellness Counseling is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology. I am also currently pursuing my PhD in Clinical Psychology and pursuing additional education regarding substance abuse treatment. Clients and colleagues describe me as empathic, down-to-earth and compassionate.
My work is tailored to each individual with a foundation in humanistic theory and the wellness model. This means I believe each person’s wellness should be based on where that person is and that person’s ideal state of wellness. I emphasize a safe and supportive environment and focus on the integration of the whole person, considering each individual’s strengths. I am well-versed in cognitive behavioral therapy, brief solution-focused, harm reduction, motivational interviewing interventions, and mindfulness based strategies. I have extensive post-graduate education and experience in geriatric mental health, have done extensive research around best-in-class treatment approaches for depression, and am passionate about helping my clients understand and manage their depression, stress and adjustment issues, life transitions, chronic pain, serious illness, grief and loss, and anger. I have completed Level One Gottman Clinical Training and my work with couples is based on the Gottman Model.
My past experience includes providing outpatient counseling for clients with severe and persistent mental health issues and disorders. I have worked with toddlers, teens, adults and older adults, those with development and physical challenges, TBI, chronic pain and multiple and chronic physical health issues in a myriad of settings including in-home, facility and community based community mental health agencies, hospitals, in-patient, group homes, retirement homes, assisted living facilities, adult family homes and skilled nursing facilities. Previous work experience includes: as a counselor in 24-hour staffed residential programs serving high-risk adolescent girls in both Seattle and Syracuse, New York; as a counselor working with Native adolescents in Alaska, and as a Psychiatric Technician at a 24/hr inpatient psychiatric program. With over 10 years’ experience supporting clients with mental health issues, working for community mental health agencies, non-profits and in private practice I also have extensive experience working successfully with clients from other cultures and those who speak English as a second language. I have served a number of industry organizations in positions on their boards of directors and enjoyed a fulfilling and successful management and consulting career which culminated in the sale of my ownership in a local research company to an internationally recognized firm.
A life-long learner who seeks out opportunities to expand and continue my education I am an active member of the American Psychological Association, the American Counselors Association, the American Mental Health Counselors Association – including the Washington chapter, and the International Society for Mental Health Online. I maintain a strong interest in utilizing technology as a tool to support positive mental health.
